Correlated to McGraw-Hill's We the People civics text, the Framework for Democracy telecourse includes 26 half-hour programs. American Heritage, the series opener, begins with a quick review of the contested presidential election of 2000 (without, unfortunately, exploring the interesting constitutional questions raised), illustrating the fact that American government doesn't begin anew each time there's an election--the Constitution is maintained regardless of changes in personnel. Which is not to say, however, that our Constitution is identical to the one first ratified in 1788; various amendments, coupled with years of judicial interpretations, have led to needed changes in this cherished living document. Contemporary footage (including the collapse of the World Trade Center's Tower Two) is interwoven with commentary by eminent scholars who discuss the philosophies that went into the formation of the Constitution, while also providing thought-provoking discussion points on how it affects us today. On the minus side, there are no graphics to illustrate key ideas, such as the governmental system of "checks and balances.” Other titles in the Framework for Democracy series (series price: $899) include: The American Experiment, The Struggle for Equality, Party Politics, The Fourth Estate, and The Federal Workplace. Although individual titles are available separately, this would work best as a series used in conjunction with the textbook. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Reagan)
