Laurel Hester was a much decorated police detective in Ocean County, NJ. Diagnosed at age 50 with terminal lung cancer, Hester wanted to transfer her pension benefits to her domestic partner Stacie Andree, but the five member board of freeholders denied her request. Their reasons for doing so were confusing, ranging from a belief in maintaining the sanctity of marriage to the claim that a benefits transfer had to be negotiated as part of a labor contract agreement. Cynthia Wade's 2009 Oscar winner for Best Documentary Short Subject offers a timely look at an important gay rights issue, following the couple's race against the clock to complete the benefits transfer before Laurel's death. Hester and Andree appear at contentious board meetings, surrounded by supporters and the media, as well as an unusual alliance of sometimes conservative, macho police officers and coworkers who joined Laurel's cause, but as the proceedings drag on, her condition deteriorates. Interwoven is footage of the couple's home life as they struggle with health and money concerns. Intense pressure from the governor's office ultimately convinced the freeholders to reverse their policy and grant the transfer (however, none agreed to explain their reasons on film). DVD extras include bonus interviews, deleted scenes, and featuretttes. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (S. Rees)
