For his follow-up to Hot and Fluffy, Gabriel Iglesias—a finalist on the 2006 edition of Last Comic Standing—presents a 2009 Comedy Central show at El Paso's Plaza Theatre. The thirtysomething Los Angeles comedian sports a casual, personable style, talking to the crowd as if they were a circle of friends (in fact, his mother and girlfriend are in the audience). Iglesias starts by recounting a night on the town with Paul Rodriguez, one of his biggest influences. From there, the comic moves on to drunk-texting, overpriced video games, his love for drive-thru restaurants, early days as a struggling standup comedian, stint on Nickelodeon's All That, and the Cinemax-addicted son of his girlfriend. Throughout, Iglesias adds impressions (of rednecks, telenovela actors, TV announcers, British twits, Bill Clinton, and pal Rodriguez), sound effects, beat-boxing, and cracks about his weight and ethnicity. As he puts it, there are six levels of fatness: “big, healthy, husky, fluffy, damn, and oh hell no.” While I'm Not Fat doesn't qualify as sophisticated humor, it's not lowest-common-denominator material either, which helps explain Iglesias' fairly broad appeal (the profanity and sexually explicit language is kept to a minimum). DVD extras include unaired footage, a deleted scene, a Q&A with the audience, and comedy bits from Martin Moreno and Noe Gonzalez. Recommended. Aud: P. (K. Fennessy)
