Want the latest trash? Clinton and Lady Di. And you read it in Video Librarian first! (...I hope, since I just made it up.) Let's talk real trash. Garbage Day, another in the exponentially growing field of planes, trains, automobiles, and truck videos aimed at younger tykes, follows young Billy and his father on a trip with Gus the garbage man. Featuring minimal narration, the video shows garbage trucks getting ready in the early morning light, picking up garbage cans (one truck has robotic arms that grab and lift each container), and dropping loads at recycling plants and the landfill. Massive trucks, giant grinders, and punishing compressors will all appeal to youngsters in the 2-6 age group.Ah, but what happens to trash that doesn't get picked up? Well, it's just more work for The Trash Troll. This environmental fantasy short focuses on a group of young kids at the beach, who share a 6-pack of pop, but leave the plastic ringed holder on the sand, where the wind sends it off to a fairly ticked trash troll. Using all the air his minuscule lungs can hold, the troll bellows to the kids and proceeds to lecture them on the dangers of littering--especially to marine birds, fish, and mammals. On a field trip to the Marine Mammal Center, the group sees both real-life and pictorial examples of what a simple 6-pack soda plastic holder can do, and then return to the beach where they watch as a recovered sea lion named Black Velvet is reintroduced to his ocean home. a pleasant short with a hefty bag size price tag that will put it out of the reach of most. Ages 4-9.Garbage Day is recommended. The Trash Troll is recommended for larger collections. (R. Pitman)
