Keith Carradine narrates this engrossing third chapter in Inecom's Civil War Minutes documentary series (see review of first set in VL-3/02). Combining high-definition cinematography, archival photographs, soldiers' letters, and artifacts, the first half of this 30-segment, double-disc set focuses on the July 1863 battle of Gettysburg, in which the Confederate army--under the command of General Robert E. Lee--invaded Union territory and suffered a stinging defeat during a pitched three-day battle that claimed the lives of some 50,000 men on both sides. Viewers will also hear the timeless tale of Colonel Strong Vincent's brave (and surely terrifying) defense of Little Round Top, stories of the leadership of General Winfield S. Hancock (whom, we learn in an interesting sidebar, later ran for U.S. president), and learn facts about the extensive duties of boy drummers. Disc two looks at other aspects of the Civil War, including the horrors of Andersonville Prison, little-known facts about an explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal, and--most compellingly--a detailed examination of the war from a medical-surgical perspective. Extraordinary research, strong visuals, and an inspired soundtrack of voices and effects all bring the action to life. DVD extras include commentary by writers/historians Michael Kraus (adviser for Miramax's Cold Mountain) and David M. Neville, along with director Mark Bussler, and a 20-minute featurette on the cultural significance of Gettysburg. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (T. Keogh)
