Donald Sutherland, with his large eyes and elfin face, has been one of the most arresting actors in recent cinematic history. This documentary traces his Canadian boyhood, his trip to London in 1958 as a young man to study dramatic technique and swift return to Canada, his rise to fame in Robert Altman's smash comedy M*A*S*H, and the many screen successes that followed. Sutherland admits that what drove him to become an actor was the need for "outside appreciation". On the heels of two failed marriages, he met his current partner of the past several years, actress Francine Racette, and the family now resides in Quebec. Many of the insider Hollywood anecdotes will appeal to patrons, as will Sutherland's candid discussion of the actor's art. The actor is shown in clips from Casanova, Day of the Locust, The Eagle Has Landed, and Ordinary People, as well as working on the sets for Ordeal By Innocence and Threshold. Recommended.
