The Winter 2002 edition of MOSAIC, the video magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ECLA), presents Glory to God Alone: The Life of J.S. Bach, a beautifully organized overview of Bach and his work that interweaves onsite visits to places that helped shape the composer's life, snippets of music, and commentary by Bach scholars Christoph Wolff, Robin Leaver and guitarist Christopher Parkening. The spirituality that pervades his work is as much a product of the times as of the man, for sacred and secular were closely connected in daily life during that period; still, it seems incredible that subsequent musicians obscured his legacy for almost 80 years until Mendelssohn sparked a revival in 1829 with the centenary performance of St. Matthew Passion. Although MOSAIC is sold as a magazine to subscribing congregations, individual copies are also available for purchase by non-subscribers. General audiences, particularly younger viewers, will find this affordable title to be both enjoyable and educational. Definitely recommended. Aud: H, P. (J. Reed)
