“Sleep medicine” is a relatively new field, although it arrives not a moment too soon for the estimated 70 million people in the U.S. who experience some difficulty getting enough sleep on a regular basis. In Good Night with the Sleep Doctor, filmed before a responsive seminar audience, clinical psychologist/sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus presents an overview of the subject, explaining that sleep deprivation carries dire consequences that can affect productivity, creativity, relationships, weight control, and sexual activity. Taking care to distinguish between “sleep disorders” that require medical intervention and “disordered sleep” that will respond to self-help measures, Breus employs statistics, facts, anecdotes, and examples as he discusses the benefits of sleep, reasons for sleeplessness, and methods for obtaining better sleep, while also sharing a detailed methodology for sleep evaluation and creation of a sleep plan. Reminding viewers that sleep is a powerful medicine crucial to every aspect of life, the personable Breus offers a well-rounded exploration of a widely experienced problem. DVD extras include a 15-minute bonus Q&A with the audience. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Reed)
