Few can deny the romance of train travel: chugging through miles of fields, deserts and mountains, the rail aficionado sees it all from the pampered comfort of a cushy train car. Recent decades, however, have witnessed a steady decline in American passenger train travel, with many of the best routes overlooked or considered impractical due to the time it takes to "get there."
