Heading out to the woods to drop a line in the water isn't what it used to be. As industry and controversial land and resource management schemes encroach on wild animal populations, landing the big one is taking a backseat to preservation. Excellently filmed by ESPN cameras for Trout Unlimited's television series, this video features catch-and-release fishing action on four prominent rivers in Montana and Wyoming, while pointing out the unique ecological challenges offered by each. On Montana's Madison river, for instance, an outbreak of whirling disease (a parasite that causes minnow trout to do a dervish dance of death) resulted in a 90 percent drop in the rainbow trout population. This video was underwritten by several corporations, and includes ads and product placement. But my guess is that most viewers will look past the commercial aspects and just see the beauty of the stream and the clarity of the relationship between the hand, the rod, and the fish. Not a how-to, but more of a travelogue on some of the notable Rocky Mountain trout streams, this program reveals no secret spots, offers no fly-tying tips, and shares no magic spells--just exquisite footage of fishin'. The other titles in the series are Great American Trout Streams--Western Rivers and Great American Trout Streams--Eastern Rivers. Recommended. Aud: P. (C.Block)
