During the Middle Ages, common folk (like the characters in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales) embarked on pilgrimages, i.e., journeys to holy shrines as a sign of spiritual gratitude or to invoke a special blessing. In modern times, pilgrimages are still commonplace, although the reasons for embarking on these sojourns embrace a wide variety of motives. In this 2-tape series, host and narrator Peter Downie takes viewers on several modern pilgrimages, introducing us to travelers from around the world who share their experiences on journeys to places such as Canterbury Cathedral in England, the Isle of Iona in Scotland, a lake in Canada's Alberta, the chapel at Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Graceland in Tennessee, and the Oklahoma City bombing site, among other destinations. An interesting look at an uncommon topic, this is recommended. Aud: C, P. (L. Stevens)
