Some older 16mm footage has been grafted onto a 1970 filmstrip w/narration in this video transfer. As an introduction to the civilization of the Ancient Greeks, this short program is surprisingly full of information. Beginning with an overview of the rise of democracy in the Greek city-state of Athens, the video goes on to cover Greek drama (including footage of what Sophocles' "Oedipus the King" might have looked like to a Greek audience of the time), the Olympic Games, Greek architecture (with requisite shots of the Acropolis and Parthenon, but also a nice explanation of the differences between Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian styles), sculpture, vase painting, and mythology (with short excursions into Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey"). Recommended for junior high through senior high school libraries. (Available from: EAV, Pleasantville, NY 10570).
