Growing Greener Schools

Forty years after America first celebrated Earth Day, environmentalism has found a place in K–12 and postsecondary education, as evidenced in this two-part PBS documentary that illustrates how schools can integrate environmental studies throughout the curriculum—providing instruction about sustainability while simultaneously promoting healthy surroundings. Part 1 illustrates how to effectively use outreach centers and field trips; create space on or near school properties for a small garden or nature reserve; adapt literature lessons to study classics with environmental themes; use school lunches to teach about nutrition; provide students with information about “green-collar” jobs, and encourage global citizenship. Part 2 features input from architects, landscape designers, and educational consultants on designing, building, or retrofitting eco-friendly facilities and campuses, with topics ranging from improving natural lighting to using nontoxic chemicals for cleaning. Educators interviewed here urge the creation of “green teams” to write a mission statement, set up a website, and measure, monitor, and evaluate results. DVD extras include a downloadable “Handbook and Curriculum Guide” with lessons for grades 6–12; an appendix with grant-writing tips, information about additional resources, and suggested “fast-track” changes; and a set of interactive games.
