While it's a well-known fact that a large number of marriages in the U.S. are doomed to end in divorce, many aren't aware that these negative statistics are also reflected in the Christian community, where upwards of 27 percent of marriages fail. In Growing Together: Building a Marriage That Lasts, university professor and author Walter Wangerin (The Book of the Dun Cow, The Book of God, Paul: A Novel) helps couples deal with marital stress by offering tips for building a lasting, loving, Christ-centered union. Unlike many books and videos on marriage that provide only laundry checklists of advice, Wangerin personalizes the subject by giving viewers an intimate look into his own courtship and marriage. Divided into nine segments, the program covers topics such as forgiveness, trust, talking and listening, sexual intimacy, and avoiding adultery. Filmed in a lecture format, Wangerin's style will strike many as rather rambling and somewhat unfocused; still, his popularity within the Christian publishing community will no doubt make this a heavily used item in both public libraries and Christian marriage classes. Recommended, overall. Aud: P. (J. Asala)
