Personable host Henry Mah takes a lighthearted, often humorous look ("I've been Chinese for a long time," Mah quips) at the serious problems of prejudice, stereotyping, and racism. Built around a series of dramatic vignettes featuring a group of Chinese-Canadian teens from Vancouver, Hanging Out examines their relationships and ideas about people within and outside their ethnic group. Designed to make viewers reconsider their own actions and beliefs, the film effectively makes the point that each person is a unique individual and should be treated accordingly. Fast-paced, informative, and entertaining, this is recommended for British Columbia libraries naturally, but would also make a good addition for larger teen issues collections. Aud: I, J, H, P. (J. As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
