Harvesting the City

We all know recycling is profitable from an environmental viewpoint, but it's also important economically. This video takes a fresh and unique approach to a familiar topic, introducing us to the lucrative world of harvesting garbage. Trash and scrap, if gathered responsibly, is an important commodity, especially in the asphalt wasteland of the city. Although the word "harvest" usually connotes agricultural plenty, the urban jungle has a crop all its own, and it doesn't all have to end up in landfills. Viewers are shown the transformation of traditionally recyclable objects such as paper and glass, but also more surprising items, such as cloth scraps, restaurant food leftovers, and even the "unrecycleable" disposable diaper--all of which can be used to form new products. This news magazine-style documentary is never preachy or pedantic; instead it offers short interview clips, great montages of city images, and an intelligent and interesting script which maintains a hopeful tone while underscoring the importance of responsible waste management.
