Hate Crimes

The Holocaust. Rwanda. The "ethnic cleansing" of Bosnia. Hatred is alive and well, but not just overseas or in history. Modern America also is victim to the brutality of hate crimes--violence against an individual for simply being who he or she is. This video ruthlessly defines, exposes, and explores the insidious nature of prejudice turned violent in a clear and powerful way. Interviews with experts, perpetrators and victims reveal that hate, unfortunately, is popular. From haunting images of swastikas and burning crosses to the ad nauseum screaming talk-show/tabloid guests, America has allowed a sort of creeping numbness to insulate itself against such horror. This video attempts to pierce that shield, pointing out that "good" people who do nothing contribute to the growth of such crime. Production values are high, and the script is effective. Repeated hate-related news clips backed by rather grating ominous music become a bit tedious, but the interviews are intense and riveting.
