Until 1997, U.S., German and English war historians assumed that the German submarine U-869 went down near Gibraltar in February, 1945. In 1991, however, professional diver John Chatteron discovered a Nazi sub 60 miles off the coast of New Jersey--a sub that wasn't supposed to be there, according to both U.S. and German records. Chatteron and a number of diving buddies spent the next six years diving on the wreck, in an attempt to uncover the identity of the mystery U-boat.
