Medieval theologians spoke of the ars moriendi—literally the art of dying (or dying well)—but modern society is inclined to shy away from thinking about death, which is the subject of this affecting and uplifting documentary focusing on two projects that aim to change our attitudes toward dying. The first involves artist Deidre Scherer, who paints the terminally ill in a manner that is truthful yet dignified, in the hopes of moving those who view her art towards greater empathy, understanding, and acceptance. The second revolves around the work of the Hallowell hospice chorus, founded by singer Kathy Leo, which not only presents concerts in nursing homes but also makes individual visits to those who are dying, serenading them with selections specifically designed to their preferences. Profiling both of these worthy endeavors, Holding Our Own also features observations from caregivers and experts such as Dr. Ira Byock (author of Dying Well) about the positive effects of such efforts. Many sequences here will unquestionably touch viewers' hearts, but more importantly this is a film that will help both the seriously ill and their families in approaching the ars moriendi with a spirit of reverence and respect rather than fear and anger.
