Shot in Philadelphia’s Germantown community, filmmaker Glenn Holsten’s documentary looks at an unusual mental health program for people dealing with depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Under the auspices of NHS Human Services, a so-called “Recovery Hair Show” is organized to give a group of people struggling with mental health issues a positive and creative focus. The idea is that some of the volunteers will be platform models, while others will do the models’ hair (sometimes with a wig), or design and create their outfits, and finally bask in the celebration of their own talent and beauty. Along the way, viewers are introduced to some of these folks’ tragic backstories, but what is mostly shown is the less interesting buzz of preparation for the fashion show as patients help other patients. Unfortunately, when that event finally arrives, it ultimately feels anti-climactic. Optional. Aud: C, P. (T. Keogh)
