An engaging look at the world of domesticated chinchilla culture that tries to combine (not altogether successfully) the charms of the quirky features Best in Show and Gates of Heaven, filmmaker Lorian Elbert's How to Properly Care for Your Pet Chinchilla profiles chinchilla owners devoted to their silky little pets (but the interviewees lack the wide-eyed weirdness of the participants in Christopher Guest's and Errol Morris's films). In fact, the wackiest thing about chinchilla fanciers is that they laud how playful and affectionate their furry friends are even as they point out that the chinchilla is a nocturnal creature who loves to run all night. So when does one pet and cuddle the little fuzzballs without depriving them of much-needed sleep? This conundrum leads a sixth-grade teacher to conclude that, although a hit with the kids, chinchillas may not be the ideal classroom pet in the same hands-on way as, say, a hamster (and then there's the matter of the little beasties' highly sensitive digestive systems). Although a low-budget effort with somewhat spotty sound and occasionally stark lighting, the homemade feel actually adds charm and a strange authenticity to the participants' chinchilla praise-singing.
