Michel Negroponte's unflinching documentary focuses on former heroin and cocaine addict Dimitri Mugianis, who kicked the habit with the help of a new (illegal) “miracle” drug: Ibogaine, derived from the root of a plant found in West Africa. Dimitri's now an Ibogaine-obsessed healer of sorts, with a mission to help others in similar straits to recover. I'm Dangerous with Love begins with the withdrawal experience of Nick—a computer-company owner who's been addicted to heroin for two years—but the focus starts to subtly shift from Dimitri's desperate subjects and their trials with drug-related sickness and Ibogaine-induced purging, to Dimitri himself, who slowly reveals his own story as a survivor of the violent and sometimes deadly NYC dope culture of the early 1990s. After the near-death experience of a patient under his care, however, Dimitri begins to rethink his entire modus operandi, and before long the former hardcore punk rocker (he was lead singer and lyricist for the band Leisure Class) lands in Africa, vying for shaman status through tribal rituals involving Ibogaine. What begins as a quest to help others ends as a more selfish but equally harrowing physical and spiritual journey. DVD extras include interviews with Ibogaine expert Howard Lotsof and New Age author Daniel Pinchbeck. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (M. Sandlin)
