Traditionally, immigrants to America have brought the "seeds of change" which have reinvigorated and renewed the nation. Now, however, some want to slam the "golden door" on newcomers, citing both environmental and economic reasons. Here is a reasoned look at both sides of a hotly debated issue, discussed by frontline players such as New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, California's Pete Wilson, and Immigration and Naturalization Services commissioner Doris Meissner. Particularly vexing is the problem of legal versus illegal immigration, a dilemma currently reaching crisis proportions in border states like Texas and California. The video looks at recent and controversial legal remedies like California's Proposition 187, which would cut services to illegal immigrants. The documentary also considers whether new immigrants represent an economic boost or burden to America, with special interests on both sides having their say. The video reminds viewers of America's historic role in welcoming immigration, but concludes that although immigration will continue, changes must be made if the system is to be fair to all.
