In this artsy independent documentary, four college-age women tell us how they loved and lost, not because their boyfriends dumped them, but because they found themselves subtly manipulated, controlled, and dominated. In short order, and with relatively few words, these women adroitly outline the arc of their relationships, revealing some of the social factors and psychological processes that led to their loss of equitable power and sense of self through too much compromise and self-effacement. Intended as a discussion-starter for women's studies, social work, consciousness-raising, and psychology venues, this award-winning tape is weakened by the device of framing the women's stories with black-and-white interludes of dance, drama, and visuals, but strengthened by an excellent study guide. Despite the "artistic" interruptions, however, the program is recommended for academic and social service organizations that are charged with relationship-issues and can afford the tape's high cost.
