The Celts (a group of pre-Christian inhabitants of Ireland) may be enjoying a historical resurgence of late, but as this excellent and beautifully-shot video points out, the Celts are just one strand in the historical narrative of the Emerald Isle. Presented in three hour-long segments, In Search of Ancient Ireland looks at the most influential people, events, and ideas in Irish antiquity. “Heroes” traces the seagoing arrival of the first settlers--early inhabitants known as “mound builders”--who buried their dead 1,000 years before the Egyptians built pyramids (and created smaller-scale Stonehenge-like structures, circa 3000 B.C., believed to be sacred places), as well as focusing on the waves of new settlers through the Bronze and Iron ages, including the Celts and Romans. “Saints” examines the legend of Ireland's most famous icon, Saint Patrick (credited with expelling snakes and using a shamrock to convert Ireland to Christianity), who wisely made accommodations for many of the pagan practices favored by the island's early inhabitants. “Warlords” chronicles the early ninth century invasions by the Vikings, who initially raided the monasteries for treasure, but eventually laid claim to the land and joined the other settlers. Combining gorgeous cinematography, wonderful music, and solid history, the DVD version includes the bonus film Over Ireland, a lovely aerial survey shot in high definition. Highly recommended.
