Filmmaking team Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato celebrate the 120th anniversary of Vogue magazine, interweaving a chronological history—from first publication in 1892 to the current House of Wintour (i.e. reign of editor Anna “Nuclear” Wintour)—with commentary by staff (and former editors such as iconic designer Vera Wang), models, and celebrities including Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker. Based on the companion Conde Nast book, this HBO-aired documentary features stories from across the decades, and anecdotes about favorite spreads and fashion eras (and some not so favorite—such as the wretched “grunge” phase), backed by archival footage and photos. The lion's share of the comments come during candid discussions with former and current fashion editors Camilla Nickerson, Grace Coddington, Polly Mellen, Jade Hobson, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, Phyllis Posnick, Tonne Goodman, and Babs Simpson, who all come together at the close for a portrait shot by photographer extraordinaire Annie Leibovitz. DVD extras include additional scenes and interviews. A fine companion to the Vogue/Wintour documentary The September Issue (VL-3/10), this is definitely recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
