If you don't want to strangle the insufferably smug James Lipton by the time his interview with Johnny Depp is over, credit Depp, whose intense thoughtfulness and obvious humility regarding his phenomenal talent and extraordinary success make this somewhat dated 2002 Bravo-aired entry from the Inside the Actors Studio series almost worth a look. Prompted by Lipton's questions, which pretend to be deep but are surprisingly fanboy-ish, Depp discusses his discomfort with his longtime standing as a teen idol, his affinity for funny hats, what it's like to work with Tim Burton, and much more, although none of it is surprising or enlightening, unless you're genuinely fascinated by fanzine-level tidbits. It's just one more example of the potential pitfalls of asking even the most intriguing artists about their work: the answers often aren't anywhere near as interesting as the work itself. DVD extras include a new introduction by Lipton and additional footage. Optional. Aud: P. (M. Johanson)
