Intimate Universe is a seven-part series conceived and hosted by Professor Robert Winston, a physician who is also one of Britain's leading fertility experts. Winston takes us from conception to the grave, using the latest in medical technology to check out places and processes within the human body that, not surprisingly, we rarely get to see. Winston is in awe of the human body, very enthusiastic about sharing what he's learned and possessed of a keen sense of adventure. He also wisely chooses to enlist the aid of several people along life's journey to help tell his story. In the episode "Raging Teens," for example, we spend most of our time with a 12/13-year-old English girl and a group of California teenaged boys. In other words, we get the word on puberty from people living through it (with a little help from the professor). This is fascinating stuff, rich in detail, humor and incredible visuals. An eighth episode appended to the fourth videocassette--"The Making of The Human Body"--takes viewers behind the scenes for a look at how the series was created. Also, the second episode, "The Miracle of Birth," is available as a single video, titled Everyday Miracle ($9.98). Over the years I've seen a good many documentaries focused on the human body; Intimate Universe is the best so far, no contest. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (P. Van Vleck)
