Bearing the subtitle “Reports from the Phoenix Lander,” this inspiring NOVA episode provides the latest updates (as of mid-2008) on the search for life on Mars. Thanks to the spectacular success of the Spirit and Opportunity research probes (launched in 2004), one of our nearest neighbors in the solar system has revealed some of its best-kept secrets, beamed to Earth as high-resolution images and digital analysis of geological samples, thrilling NASA scientists with the discovery of bedrock and other telling evidence of water from Mars' ancient history. This close-knit crew of engineers and scientists (led by omnipresent mission director Steve Squyres) watched excitedly as Spirit and Opportunity lasted 16 times longer and traveled 20 times farther than mission experts expected. Now, with the Martian landing of the Phoenix probe on May 25, 2008, and an aerial array of satellites surveying Mars from orbit, the “Red Planet” is being explored and analyzed in unprecedented detail. The central question (is there, or was there, life on Mars?) remains unanswered, but this program suggests a positive response, based on spectral analysis of soil and rock samples, as well as land formations that indicate Mars once had large seas of water that eventually turned into an acidic, salty brine. Why the water evaporated, and why the remaining evidence indicates that microbial life on Mars will likely be discovered, are just two of the tantalizing subjects of this intriguing program that combines eye-popping visuals with informative interviews. DVD extras include printable materials for educators. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Shannon)
