This initial entry in "The Golden Eye" series of tapes that will focus on privately held art collections, visits the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum in Boston, MA. Beginning with a brief tour of some of the highlights of the museum, viewers are next given a history of the woman whose name the museum bears. Born in 1840, Ms. Gardner's circle of friends included such luminaries as Henry James, Brahms, and Strauss. When her father died, she inherited over a million dollars, which she used to purchase artworks. Viewers see rare works by Vermeer, Botticelli, Raphael, Rembrandt, Titian, and Cellini, among others. Since Ms. Gardner was a lover of the work from the Italian Renaissance, the collection is weighted in that direction. In 1903, the museum was opened to the public, as it remains today. A nicely photographed tour, this video is recommended. (Available from most distributors.)
