Humankind's “warring nature” and tendency toward “environmental neglect” are the twin themes of this hour-shy 2007 multimedia ballet showcase for the music and artwork of Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, backed by the dancing and choreography of the Alberta Ballet under director Jean Grand-Maître. Shot in high definition at the premiere performance, The Fiddle and the Drum is set to remastered versions of 10 of Mitchell's songs, ranging from early works (“Big Yellow Taxi”) to three cuts from her most recent CD Shine. Visually, the stage is dominated by Mitchell's latest artwork, a video installation titled Green Flag Song projected on a huge circular drum overhanging the stage, while dancers beneath strut joyfully in close formation, engage in mock combat, and writhe in death throes (exhibiting impressive athleticism). Serving up a deeply-felt outcry against violence and hatred while simultaneously celebrating humanity's capacity for love and compassion, The Fiddle and the Drum is presented in Dolby Digital stereo, and features extras including cast and crew interviews, a standalone “Cyclops” version of Green Flag Song, and a booklet.
