Filmed over three years, independent filmmaker Yvette Torell's documentary about five single mothers and their families offers an excellent long-range view of both the challenges and triumphs of single family life. Three of the women profiled here became single mothers due to life's unforeseen circumstances (a teen whose boyfriend left her, a woman whose two marriages ended in divorce, and a widow), while the other two--both career women in their late 30s when they got pregnant--intentionally chose single parenting. Careful editing, solid musical choices, realistic commentary, very amusing animated sequences (drawn, it turns out, by Ms. Torell's son), and a welcome racial diversity (several ethnic groups are represented here), help make this content-rich program widely accessible. However, while this is highly recommended for its content, budget conscious libraries might want to consider the much more affordable And Baby Makes Two (VL-1/00). Aud: C, P. (K. G. Schneider)
