One of the rising stars of gospel music, Houston, Texas native Kim Burrell has gained a significant national following since her debut album was released in 1997. Contemporary gospel music has taken on a distinctly modern character in the last decade as the influence of soul/pop, new R&B and even hip-hop have left their imprints on gospel. As a vocal stylist, Burrell is quite reminiscent of Aretha Franklin, and this concert, shot during the recording of a live album in November, 2000 at the Bountiful Blessing COGIC in Memphis, proves that Burrell can definitely shout-it-down when the spirit moves her. The numbers featured on this video, which include "I'll Keep Holding On," "Calgary," "How Will You Know?" and "Victory," are mostly high-energy songs, with a smattering of more contemplative tunes. The audio quality is very good, with Burrell's band and backup singers nicely complementing her performance. For gospel fans who have not seen Kim Burrell in person, this will be a real treat.
