Knowing Eternity

In his reflections on the first 10 chapters, world-renowned scholar and humanitarian Jean Vanier sees the Gospel of St. John as the gospel of growth, unique in helping us to discover who Jesus is and bring us into greater communion with God. Vanier, who is photographed in intimate settings--offset with views of nature and great works of art--offers an excellent exploration of scripture here, taking viewers deeper into the text as he looks at issues surrounding relationships, power, consumerism, depression, and death. Although he is a Roman Catholic, Vanier draws from the wisdom and example of many theologians, philosophers, and activists, including Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Buber, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Oscar Romero, and Socrates. The heartfelt simplicity of this learned and devout man continues to resonate long after one has finished watching the series, motivating the viewer toward further scriptural reading.
