Viewers--particularly kids who have a fondness for the reptilian--will love this exquisitely filmed National Geographic video which features a pregnant 13-foot Venezuelan anaconda capable of squeezing to death and swallowing whole 30-lb. rodents (capybaras). But the snake, named "Diega", is not the only actor in this swampy drama that takes place in the flooded savannas occupying one-third of Venezuela. Viewers will also meet caimans and piranhas and assorted other critters with nasty attitudes--all of whom are in various stages of stalking or being stalked. Land of the Anaconda tells the story of the husband-and-wife wildlife biologist team, Jesus Rivas and Renee Owens, as they work to put together the puzzle of the anaconda's behavior and love life. Although you'd want to avoid anacondas in real life (they not only can hurt you, but according to Renee Owens, they "smell like animals that have been rotting for four days"), the wonder of video allows you to safely get up close and personal with these giant creatures. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: I, J, H, C, P. (S. Fisher)
