Slabby Pahoehoe could be the name of a major league baseball player, but it's not: it's a type of smooth, slow-flowing lava--one quite different in appearance from the more jagged, tinkling "'a'a" flows. Viewers will learn more about these and other lava formations in Lava Flows and Lava Tubes, which combines detailed narration and spectacular footage of volcanic eruptions producing rivers of lava (with some lava walls 50-feet high!). If you've ever crawled through a lava tube or on a cinder cone you've probably wondered how they were formed (well, at least if you grew up in Hawaii or Iceland); this program--featuring enough fire and destruction to please even the most jaded of junior high students--provides the answers. The DVD includes a bonus film, the half-hour award-winner Kilauea: Close Up of an Active Volcano. Recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (J. Asala)
