This History Channel presentation asks what would become of planet Earth if the entire human race suddenly (if also inexplicably) vanished en masse, leaving all of the physical elements of societal infrastructure in place. No, with respects to the late Charlton Heston, the world wouldn't witness the rise of those damn dirty apes. Instead, what would happen is a gradual decline and decay of roads, buildings, hydro projects, and (in a century or two) bridges and skyscrapers. Pets and zoo creatures enclosed when the humans disappeared would be doomed to early death, but animals in the wild would venture into deserted urban centers in search of food. Some species would fare better than others—marine life would thrive again with the end of over-fishing and oceanic pollution—and human-endangered terrestrial species would increase their numbers, while scavengers such as mice and seagulls would need to adapt to new food-gathering techniques in the absence of manmade garbage heaps. Combining clever CGI work with intelligent discussion regarding comparable situations—such as the fate of Prypiat in Ukraine following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster—Life After People offers a fascinating spin on the ultimate “what if?” scenario. DVD extras include additional scenes. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (P. Hall)
