For many, the wolf embodies the spirit of the wilderness, as well as some of its darker, more menacing aspects, although separating truth from legend is difficult since wolves generally steer clear of humans. Narrated by Liev Schreiber, this 2005 Discovery Channel production finds photographers and naturalists Jim and Jaime Dutcher taking a different approach, observing wolves not as scientists, but rather as social partners. In Living with Wolves, the Dutchers are seen hand-raising wolf pups within a remote fenced wilderness area in Idaho, while also documenting the Sawtooth pack (named for the nearby mountain range) over a six-year period. Boasting stunning photography (crisp, clear, and colorful, capturing both the personality of the animals and the rugged majesty of the natural world), this beautiful and engaging non-scientific study of these impressive creatures also includes the Dutchers' 1997 Emmy award-winning prequel Wolves at Our Door. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (C. Block)
