Extraordinary Louisiana-born singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams (voted one of VH1's 100 greatest women of rock 'n roll) has a marvelous showcase in this extended version of her 1998 appearance on Austin City Limits, featuring 16 songs--10 of which hail from her hit album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, released the same year. Williams' songs about transitions and passages are achingly beautiful, with highlights here including the soaring "Drunken Angel," folk-rock "Metal Firecracker," and the stirring "Sweet Old World." In addition, the mesmerizing, shamanic blues of "Joy" remind one of the singer's professed appreciation of the Doors. Presented in sparkling Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, this is highly recommended.
