Macbeth

This production of Shakespeare's classic tragedy about ambition and madness was filmed at the Globe, London's precisely reconstructed theater from the 16th century where many of the Bard's plays premiered. Strategically shot with high-definition cameras that fluidly explore the stage's close performance space, this is an explosively passionate and eerie performance benefiting from two brilliant leads: Joseph Millson as the titular general returning from a long war who is seduced by a prediction that he will become king, and Samantha Spiro as driven dynamo Lady Macbeth, who pushes her husband towards taking his place on the throne. As their feverish conspiracy unfolds and the body count grows, director Eve Best unleashes a sense of hallucinatory violence that will surround and finally claim the overwhelmed power couple. Boasting a solid supporting cast—including Stuart Bowman as Macduff, Gawn Grainger as Duncan, and Billy Boyd as Banquo—this is an excellent rendition of one of Shakespeare's most notable tragedies.
