Why are there a cow and donkey in the Nativity scene? This and other questions are answered in Professor of Art History Lois Swan Jones' Madonna and Child. Focusing on the symbolic aspects of sculpture and paintings in Europe during the Middle Ages, the program contains pictures taken in some 35 medieval European churches (including Chartres and Notre Dame). Though more scholarly than mainstream, the video does offer interesting insight into the genesis of traditional symbols and motifs associated with the Annunciation, Nativity, and Adoration of the Magi that were readily familiar to medieval audiences, but are largely forgotten today. Recommended. (Available from: Dr. Lois Swan Jones, 3801 Normandy, Dallas, TX 75205-2106; (214) 528-2732.)
