A rich and compelling profile of a great leader and a great man. Director Jonathan Demme brilliantly renders a portrait of Nelson Mandela that is inspirational and profoundly educational, insightfully drawing parallels between Mandela's struggles and those of his South African homeland. The documentary introduces viewers to the many stages in Mandela's career: his childhood in the Xhosa tribe, his young adulthood as a lawyer, activist, and revolutionary; his imprisonment, and finally, his position as president of a racially united South Africa. Mandela's life story is told in great detail and includes exclusive interview footage with the legendary leader on many topics, including love, controversial tribal rituals, and morality, as well as behind-the-scenes shots of the Nobel Peace Prize winner engaged in his daily routine. The sublime soundtrack's songs set an emotional backdrop for Mandela's biographical profile (many of the musicians have been exiled from South Africa). Whether interested or not in the enduring plight of South Africans, Mandela is a must-see. Highly recommended. (A. Glover)
