One hundred and ninety-five bucks for a half hour's-worth of twenty heterosexual, talking-headed guys schpritzing about sex and relationships?--I think not. While Men Talk Sex seems to be an earnest attempt at capturing a snapshot of male attitudes, views, and experiences, it generally treads closer to the "who cares? zone" than the erogenous zone. The erotic terrain covered ranges widely--from autoeroticism and sexual initiations, to the significance of anatomical endowments; from the old "Women-from-Venus, Men-From-Mars" conundrum, to men's cheatin' ways. Yeah, the group interviewed is multicultural, diverse in age and opinion, and obviously trying as hard as hell to please the unblinking documentary lense with good humor and honesty. Yeah, there are moments: the beefy, wrestler-type dude talking tantra; the Henry Miller reincarnation philosophizing about sexuality, animal nature, and hormonal knee-jerk; the charming duffer recounting meeting his retirement home paramour while searching for someone to scrub his back; the new age guy who looks like a deer caught in the headlights as he describes how he learned to kiss. And yeah, there are a couple of de rigeur testosteronal bozos thrown in just to satisfy expectations. In the end, however, a certain sincerity of intent can't overcome the fact that what's being sold as insight is little more than entertaining sound bites and anecdotes, without much context or meaning. The video case contains a little stuck-on warning about the video's graphic descriptive content and unsuitability for minors. The price of this piece alone will most likely be enough to keep it out of the reach of most library clientele, minor or otherwise. Aud: C, P. (G. Handman)
