A revision of Hawkhill's 1995 title Biologists at Work, the two-part program Modern Biology presents an historical overview of the "study of life" from Hippocrates to Darwin to the DNA work of the late Francis Crick and James Watson, followed by interviews with nine contemporary biologists, including geneticist Richard Burgess and biochemist Bruce Ames. Technically, there is a little bit of overlap between the two sections, some of the stock film footage is starting to show its age, and the sound levels are inconsistent from interview to interview. Still, the first part of the program offers a comprehensive introduction, while the second could inspire an undeclared student to pursue a degree in biology (the vocabulary is not beyond the reach of a high school audience, even though the price makes this more targeted to colleges and universities). A copy of the script is included with the program, and the DVD also features a quiz. Recommended, overall. [Note: Modern Chemistry: An Introduction is also newly available.] Aud: H, C. (R. Reagan)
