I've never met a NOVA film I didn't like--at least not yet--and Mountain of Ice is no exception, taking viewers to the coldest continent on earth, Antarctica, a mythic, nearly inaccessible land that truly can be called one of the last frontiers on earth. Mountaineers Jon Krakauer, author of Into Thin Air, and Conrad Anker lead a team of climbers, scientists, and filmmakers on a bid to reach the summit of Vinson Massif, Antarctica's tallest peak, facing 60-mph winds and temperatures that reach 35 degrees below zero (not counting the wind chill!). Interwoven throughout are insights into the geography and geology of this barren continent, as well as historical reminiscences about the experiences of past explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott, who raced to reach the South Pole in 1911.
