When we think of Appalachia, the word "Muslim" does not immediately spring to mind. Yet, here in the proud heart of America's Bible belt--a land long dominated by conservative Baptists, Methodists, and evangelicals--the Islamic faith is rapidly growing. What do longtime residents think of these newcomers, and how have Muslims learned to cope as "strangers in a strange land?" Muslims in America: Islam in Exile offers testimony from Muslims, social workers, and college professors, who describe Islam as a complete way of life incorporating beliefs, customs, and diet. Tracing the history of Islam from its birth in the seventh century, through its conquests and cultural achievements over time, to its recent remarkable growth in America due to immigration and religious conversion, this documentary reminds us that Islam's differences with American customs are not only theological but also cultural and political. For example, a Muslim's belief in faith above secular concerns directly contradicts with America's long held cherished separation of church and state, while a Muslim's tradition of universal community values sometimes clashes with America's tradition of rugged individualism. Not surprisingly, public schools can become a flashpoint, where an innocent hug can violate Muslim beliefs in a strict separation of the sexes. The program concludes on a hopeful note, suggesting that Muslims are more likely to be strengthened as their faith is tested in their adopted land, and that communication and mutual respect will eventually help both cultures find common ground. A perceptive and humane documentary, this timely program is recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (S. Rees)
