Based on the book by Dorothy Ruth Pirone, this portrait of George Herman "Babe" Ruth, or "Mr. Baseball" as he was known, is a good, if slightly misleading, video biography. What's essentially misleading is the title, since daughter Dorothy is infrequently seen-and gives very little evidence that she either understood or was very close to her father when she does speak. In lieu of the "real" story of the Babe, we get instead a competent, if very complimentary Reader's Digest type guide to the highlights of Ruth's life: the fact that Ruth held the all-time home run record for 52 yrs., his record-breaking 60 homers for the '27 New York Yankees, his struggles with cancer in the mid-40's, and the huge crowds that turned out to view his casket at Yankee Stadium, upon his death in 1948. The lowlights-including the stormy breakup of his first marriage-are glossed over. We're not saying that it's necessary to uncover the dirt to make a good biography. We're only saying that if you're going to promote a book or video as an "inside" story, it should offer something more than what can be found on the back of baseball cards. Recommended for larger sports collections. (Available from most distributors.)
