National Geographic and NASCAR might seem like strange bedfellows, but NG's Stock Car Fever manages to take an interesting look at the historical and personal side of the sport. Boiling down the reasons for racing's popularity, the fans cite "speed, crashes, and cute guys." The narrator adds in 700 horsepower V8s, cool uniforms and the courting of death. One of the drivers also points out that stock car racing is "fan friendly"; i.e., everybody in America has, at one time or another, driven a little too fast and wondered what it must be like to drive at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour. Building details around the main story of drivers Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarret chasing the Winston Cup Championship, Stock Car Fever will appeal to dedicated gearheads and general viewers alike. Only don't expect National Geographic's usual high standards of cinematography since it's virtually all NASCAR footage. Recommended. Aud: P.NASCAR's Greatest Races offers highlights from the entire history of NASCAR racing from its beginnings on Daytona Beach in 1959 to present day. What makes a NASCAR race memorable? Photo-finishes, for sure. But indelible moments include Richard Petty's ("The King") final race, the debut of a young Jeff Gordon, and personal reminiscences by the drivers chronicling their epic duels with competitors. Recommended. Two other titles are also available at the same price: NASCAR's Greatest Drivers and NASCAR's Greatest Rivalries. Aud: P. (S. Fisher)
