Filmmaker Ajae Clearway's short documentary reports that one out of every 2000 children are born “intersex”—i.e., with indeterminate genitalia for determining whether the baby is a boy or a girl—a condition for which there are numerous names and variations: Turner syndrome, XXY ovotestes, Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser syndrome, Sawyer's syndrome, or hermaphrodite. Featuring interviewees whose personal experiences range from acceptance to bitterness, One in 2000 also includes footage from the San Francisco Human Rights Commission Intersex Hearing in 2004, and touches on the controversy surrounding genital operations that are performed (possibly unnecessarily) on approximately five babies each day. Also presenting some brighter stories of people born intersex who have struggled with identity issues but found some semblance of normalcy within their lives, One in 2000 is sure to spur discussion. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
