Hitler's fascination with German history, especially the stories of Teutonic knights, was evident in the massive architectural structures he commissioned during the 1930s. This video looks at the 'castles' which Hitler and his right-hand man, Heinrich Himmler, built to house the various schools that trained the Reich soldiers and airmen, as well as several older castles that were taken over by Himmler's SS troops and used during the day for educational purposes and at night for weird rituals (reflecting Hitler's passion for the supernatural and occult). Today, three major Order Castles remain largely intact, and this video takes viewers on extensive tours both exterior and interior that include a look at surviving art works (sculptures, carvings, etc.). Third Reich historians and architectural students will find this title of special interest, but it's a marginal purchase for general libraries. A far better choice for those interested in Hitler and architecture is First Run's Architect of Doom (VL-11/95), recently re-released on DVD. Aud: C, P. (J. Carlson)
